Abhinav Kumar, a trusted IPS officer and intelligence chief close to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police of Uttarakhand. Old Doscos (former student of the famous The Doon School) Abhinav won the race to become the police chief under Deepam Seth and PVK Prasad, who were a batch ahead of him. He has a higher education from the world’s leading Oxford University (UK).

After Ashok Kumar remained DGP for 3 years and there was no possibility of extension and he himself expressed his unwillingness, it was decided that among the eligible 7 IPS officers, the top-3 would be Deepam Seth-PVK Prasad (both 1995 batch) and Abhinav (1996 batch). A panel of names of eligible IPS officers for DGP is sent to UPSC. Out of which, the commission approves the names of 3 eligible and returns to the state government that the CM can make any of them DGP.

In such a situation, the Uttarakhand government had 7 eligible faces including Amit Sinha-Murugesan and Sanjay Gunjyal (all 1997 batch) and Ajay Prakash Anshuman (1998 batch) for DGP.

The new police chief is likely to recommend to the CHIEF Minister to shift some IPS-PPS officers to improve the department.

It will be a big challenge for the relatively young DGP to bring the law and order of the four big districts of Uttarakhand, especially the capital Dehradun, back on track and put the drug mafia in jail. The PAC department has been withdrawn from ADG PVK Prasad.
