EAM S Jaishankar grabs the international headlines saying “With multiple options in hand, India Should Be Appreciated. Do you have any problem with that?”
In yet another display of his quick wit and charm, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar silenced an international lady journalist during a recent press conference. Addressing a panel at the ongoing Munich Security Conference alongside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, The incident occurred when the journalist asked a question about India’s decision to continue buying oil from Russia, despite the ever prevailing tensions between Russia and the United States, specially fueled since Russia Ukrain war.
The journalist, known for her sharp questions, asked if India’s decision to purchase oil from Russia would impact its relationship with the US. To this, S Jaishankar responded with a smile, that in such cases, India must be appreciated for not keeping all the eggs in one basket, ie having multiple options.
This response from the EAM of India once again showed his prowess in handling tough self proclaimed oversmart questions with ease and grace. Jaishankar is known for his witty remarks and has often been compared to the legendary wits shimmering in duo of Akbar and Birbal, known in every households for their wit and wisdom.
In fact, the EAM himself believes that Lord Krishna and Lord Hanuman were the world’s greatest diplomats. He often quotes stories from Indian mythology to explain his diplomatic approach.
In one of his previous interviews, S Jaishankar had said, ‘Lord Krishna and Lord Hanuman was a master of diplomacy. He was able to maintain a shabd praman by citing the anecdotes from the epic Indian Magnum Opus Mahabharat.
Such quicksilver approach is not nee as far as S Jaishankar is concerned. During the Russia-Ukraine conflict, S Jaishankar had grabbed headlines for his witty response to a question about Europe’s role in the crisis. He had said, ‘Europe thinks that its problems are the world’s problems, but the world’s problems are not Europe’s problems.’
This incident once again proved that wordsmith S Jaishankar is a master of professional ethics too and has the ability to turn any situation in his favor with his wit and charm.
The EAM’s handling of tricky situations with ease and his ability to use humor to diffuse tension has earned him admiration not just in India, but also in the international community including his counterparts, PM and Presidents of world powers like Italy, Russia, America and even China as showcased precisely in Rajat Sharma’s show.
S Jaishankar’s response to the international journalist’s question once again proved that role of such skilled diplomats will shape the result of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Who is not afraid to use his wit and charm to silence his critics will rise like a crescendo knows the PM very well and hence this department of international diplomacy is delegated to this wizard of bureaucracy.
