A report by US-based cybersecurity firm Resecurity has claimed that personally identifiable information of about 815 million i.e. 81.5 crore Indians has been leaked on the dark web.
Aadhaar Data Leak: There has been a big case of Aadhaar data leak of Indians on the dark web. According to a report in Business Standard, US-based company Resecurity has claimed that aadhaar and passport related data of 81.5 crore Indians has been leaked on the dark web. It has been said in the report that an attempt has been made to sell name, phone number, address, Aadhaar and passport related information online.
The US firm wrote in its post that on October 9, a ‘pwn0001’ person shared a post on the breach forum. In this, he gave information about access to Aadhaar and passport related records of 81.5 million Indians and tried to sell it. According to the Resecurity report, the man proposed to sell aadhaar and passport related information for $ 80,000.
It is being said in media reports that this data leak may be leaked to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Business Standard reported that ICMR has not yet responded to this. Reports say that this data leak discovered by CBI PWN0001 is being investigated. Hackers on social site X informed that hackers have leaked private data of more than 80 0 million Indians.The leaked data includes name, father’s name, phone number, passport number, Aadhaar number and age information. However, there has been no response from the government on this data leak case so far.
Earlier in August, another person named Lucius had offered to sell 1.8 terabytes of data on the breach forum. According to a Brookings report in April 2022, the Comptroller and Auditor General had examined UIDAI and found that the authority had not effectively regulated its customer vendors and protected the security of their data vaults.Earlier also, there was a case of data leak. In June, the government had launched an investigation after personal data of vaccinated citizens, including VVIPs, was allegedly leaked from the CoWin website through the Telegram messenger channel.
