Dev Patel makes his directorial debut with the action-packed revenge tale “Monkey Man,” set to be theatrically released by Universal Pictures on April 5. Produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, the film features Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man involved in an underground fight club, inspired by the Hindu deity Hanuman.
The movie follows Kid, who, after enduring years of beatings in the fight club, discovers a way to infiltrate the city’s sinister elite. Fueled by suppressed rage and childhood trauma, Kid unleashes a campaign of retribution against those who took everything from him. The trailer exhibits intense action reminiscent of “John Wick,” with Patel’s character embarking on a quest for bloody revenge.
Dev Patel directs “Monkey Man” based on his original story and screenplay co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Initially planned for Netflix, the film now sees a theatrical release through Monkeypaw’s deal with Universal. The cast includes Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher, and Makarand Deshpande.

Executive producers include Jonathan Fuhrman, Natalya Pavchinskya, Aaron L. Gilbert, Andria Spring, Alison-Jane Roney, and Steven Thibault. “Monkey Man” is presented by Universal Pictures as a Bron Studios production, a Thunder Road film, a Monkeypaw production, a Minor Realm/S’Ya Concept production, in association with WME Independent and Creative Wealth Media.
